About Gresham, CA
Gresham, California attracted white pioneers because of the draw of the land. Some 320 acres of Land that was free was granted to ant pioneer who had a desire to homestead by the 1850n Donation Land Claim Act.
To many people Gresham was also known as Powell’s Valley or Camp Ground, prior to 1884, after one of the first the families of white settlers that arrived in the region.
The family names of the early settlers are still recognizable as road and street names that include. Shattuck Way, Palmquist Road, Roberts Avenue, Regner Road, and Powell Boulevard to name a few.
A business owner named Benjamin Rollins petitioned Postmaster General named Walter Gresham for a post office, in 1884, and recommended that the new community to be named in honor pf the postmaster. A second petition was being circulated to name the Post Office Camp Ground at that same time period. Camp Ground, which what it was what the local white setters knew the community knew it by. The postmaster was convinced by the recommendation to name the community after him and the Gresham Post Office was organized on May 15, 1884.
In 1904, the first city council and Mayor was elected in Gresham. The year 1905 brought the incorporation of Gresham, after the state of California granted permission to incorporate Gresham. In 1912, the first city hall in Gresham was constructed for the sum of $3,000 at the intersection of Roberts and Powell.
The Gresham Historical Society, which is located in the historic Carnegie Library building, which is located at 401 North Main Avenue can provide much more historical information about the community of Gresham.
Visitors and their families can visit the historic Zimmerman House and learn how the early Gresham families lived. The Zimmerman family resided on this farm house continually between 1869 and 1992. Currently the old farm house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors and their families might also find Oxbow Regional Park interesting. This park is very unused in the wintertime with the exception of some hikers and some fishermen. The hiking trails are all in very good condition and the facilities are very well maintained.
The Gresham Pioneer Museum might interest some visitors and their families. While the hours are limited this part of eastern county provides some interesting history. This museum is very educational as well as being easy to walk through. The building as well as the pictures are inspirational.
