About Cameron Park, CA

Cameron Park is located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas’ in the Northern California Gold Country about west of Southern Lake Tahoe, 30 miles east of Sacramento and is part of the Sacramento metropolitan region. In 2010, the population of Cameron Park was some 18,228 people, which is a significant from the 2000 population of 14,549 people.

The Southern Maidu Indian tribe, which was also known as the Nisenan Indian tribe, were first native Indian inhabitants of the region that surrounded Cameron Park. Burial mounds and grinding still serve as a glimpse of the past and remain in many different locations, close to and within Cameron Park.

In the 1950’s, when a man named Larry Cameron purchased some acres of property in the foothills in order to ranch, modernism led the development of other properties. In the following tears, this land was subsequently subdivided into lots that included high density residential neighborhoods, apartment lots, business lots, ranch sized lots, medium sized lots, and hi density lots.

These days, Cameron Park is comprised of businesses, apartments, single family homes, in addition to ranch homes.

The Cameron Airpark Estates serves as a taxiway that leads between the customers’ residences of the neighboring airport. These estates also have very wide streets. Several homes serve to house personal airplanes inside their have oversized garages. This permits to commute between home and work completely by air. The Cameron Airport is next to the Cameron Park Estates, which is a public airport that is of significant economic importance to the surrounding region.

The Cameron Park Lake, is a manmade lake that is located next to the Airpark Estates. The lake covers about ten acres. The lake area includes a trail that encircles a swimming area that is separated from the primary lake by an earthen dam, a sandy beach, playgrounds, tennis courts, boat rentals, and picnic areas. separated from the main lake by an earthen dam. Aquatic fowl and turtles are always visible at the lake, and the lake is regularly stocked with such fish as black crappie, black bass, and bluegill by the Community Services District. The Summer Spectacular is also held on Cameron Park Lake right around Independence Day holiday. This event has been providing a fireworks display, food, and entertainment to attendees since 1999. Another very popular event is known as Ribstock, which is also held at Cameron Park Lake. This event is a barbeque festival that lasts for only one day, which features barbeque competition that is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

At one time, Cameron Park came to be known as the home of Sam’s Town, where weary many travelers would stop between Lake Tahoe and their home. This amusement and restaurant located next Highway 50. However. In 2002 is was demolished, and the Forklift Grocery was built on that same location. This Grocery store, part of the chain of Nugget Markets. There is only a plaque to note its previous existence.

Parts of the Skinner Winery and Vineyard from the early 1860’s, can still be seen at the intersection of Cameron Park Drive and Green Valley Road. Part of the cellar is all that remains of Skinner’s ranch. There is small remnants of the distillery wall, that is located in the mobile home park behind some mobile homes, that is located close to the southern corner of the intersection, and the Skinner cemetery, which is located close to the southwestern corner of the intersection. The cemetery contains the graves of Jesse and James Skinner, as well as three of their sons. The cemetery is located behind a pizza restaurant on a small hill just west of the intersection. Only a fence and remnants of some headstones are still there as the result of vandalism and time. There are many other settler type cemeteries that located all around Cameron Park.
