About Windsor, CA

In ancient time, Windsor was known only for being fascinating and beautiful green valley with very refreshing bushy oak trees. Grasses grew as tall just like the pack saddle of a horse. in 1851, according to Windsor’s history, the earliest immigrants of the area were John Prewett, who used to be the first professor in the year 1853, Ike and Tom Smith, James Campbell, J.W. Calhoun, and trapper and a hunter James Brooks, H.J. Pool, the Chitwood Brothers and L. Slusser. Sometime between 1853 and 1852, Henry White, Alexander Wilson, Robert Cunningham, J.W. Yates, RT Mitchell and George Brumfield arrived in the area and settled in.

In the early days, all maps of land area that was sold by the land office based in San Francisco were coded with section numbers, and degree combination. In the year 1853, buyers knew that the land area which they can purchase is located in the hills or on the river bottom and it was sold for $1.25 per acre.

Henry Bell is one of the earliest settler insisted living on high land who used to live in lowland place and worked in a swampy land. He never thought that living in the river bottom land was one of the greatest idea because it’s one of the most abundant farmlands in the country. Henry Bell is the first person who established the earliest mercantile store on the part of his land which he purchased that measured 160 acres. He is a typical type of man who lived in the area and worked on a lots of things for improvement. It happens to be that his 160 acres occupied the land area where Windsor now is located.

Colonist from all over the Ireland, England, Germany, United States, Scotland and France lived for some time in the Eastern states prior to relocating to California. However, before living the country this colonist maintained their culture traditions to create an appealing and wonderful blend of society and culture in Windsor city. A pony express traveler decided the name of Windsor due to its area’s simplicity and a memory of his charming beauty grounds that surrounds his native England’s castle. In the year 1855, Windsor got its name by a man named Hiram Lewis. Because he was captivated of the beautiful nature in Windsor, he was so please on his surrounding areas, he decided to live and used to be the town’s first postmaster. On August 31, 1855, they established a post office called the Windsor Post Office.

In the year 1856, East Windsor used to be the center of all business enterprise. It includes the Lindsay & Clark’s Dry Goods Store, two confectionary shops, a hotel and barroom, blacksmith shops, a saloon, HH. Lafferty’s shoe shop and a boarding house.

In the year 1872, they built a railroad to Windsor, and from East to West, the town moved closer to the rail line. Because of the railroad, farmers were given the opportunity to sell extensive fruit production on the other end of the line. For the first decade, they successfully received the services of telephone system purchased by W.C. Chisholm. Every call needs certain amount for them to use the telephone. People are really grateful for this technology, however, in using the phone, they need to hook-up the equipment and that includes the pole.

In late 1911, the electricity was also given to the city. It was the Power Company and the Cloverdale Electric Light who provided their first electric power. During that time, only one person named Johnny Walker had the knowledge about electricity which caused them big trouble. Some houses were burned because of some electric system that causes fire due to some resident’s mistakes in adding plenty of plugs.
